New media, new mother?

It used to be that when you had trouble deciding on something, needed someone's opinion or even approval, you asked your mom. Mother knows best, as they say. So why is it, with the inception of new media, ie facebook, we have turned to our so-called "friends" or "followers" as a trusted source when deciding on our personal matters? Big Daddy wanted to buy a new truck. Instead of discussing the matter with family members or close personal friends, he decides to post everything on his facebook account, from the initial meeting, the proposed cost of the truck, the nuts and bolts of the deal and then finally the decision. This process took about a week, and throughout the entire decision making, his friends and followers listed their opinions, thoughts and comments. Huh. When did it happen that we all woke up one morning and thought I'm going to share every detail of my personal life with the world and trust their advice, opinions and in fact, rely on their information? I guess, in a way, this is what I'm doing with this blog. A way to express my own feelings and opinions on certain matters, and welcome if not expect some type of feedback and response. New media, new world, that's for sure.

Pride and prejudice?

Why is it that we love to show off our new finds, but can never really be proud of them? Unlike many other boxing day sale shoppers, I took full advantage of the day after Christmas sales to stock up and search for those great finds. And boy did I find them. Among my many great deals were a few sweaters and a new winter coat, well half of a coat as Mr. Big (this will be my husband from now on) likes to call it. You know it's one of those amazing new style coats with 3/4 length sleeves. Old Navy- great deal! They look really good with the new long style gloves I got with them! But anyways, I digress. My best new find is a beautiful knit scarf, pashmina style, that is long enough to wrap around me twice or scrunch up around my neck. But the best part is that I paid.. guess how much? Yes that's right an incredible 70% off for a low low price of $8!! Ridiculous, I know. It's such a beautiful scarf that I've already gotten several compliments on it. So here's my point, each time someone compliments me on my scarf, I feel the need to say "thanks and guess how much I got it for?" Because if anything the price makes it even that much more attractive. Do people really care how good of a deal you got on your stuff? Can't we just be proud of our things and accept compliments as they are given? Because I'm sure the lady in the restaurant this afternoon didn't really care that I got it 70% off and she didn't. Am I indirectly taking someone's compliment and throwing in their face? I need to reflect on this, because I know that I do this a lot. I can never accept a compliment on something without telling them how much I paid for it. So what does that tell them about me? Well as I continue to ponder this part of my character, I take some consolation in knowing that I'm not the only one that does this and am just as often the one finding myself speechless and incredibly green with envy when someone else throws their great finds in my face.

To HD or not to HD? That is the question

So my husband and I have been having an ongoing debate about whether the high definition route is the way to go, and if, ultimately, the cost is warranted. You can probably figure out which side of the fence I'm on. If my husband were this super duper sports fanatic, there would be no question. But let's be honest, he's not. And as most household budget belts are tightening up, to spend the extra few bucks (or hundred if you count the year's total), what's the worth?

We've had the debate with our friends, family and neighbours and if we were to go the democratic route (which we are not, because they really don't get a vote, it's purely for consensus information), the vote would be for HD. Apparently, it's unquestionable quality, in picture and in sound. That's really not the debate, it's whether the cost would warrant the difference, given the choice and frequency of our programming. So, here we have it. Both sides of the debate, when last night, the answer was pretty clear. Right there in front of us. We were watching the news when I made a comment about how it was funny they made a simple mistake on a photo caption. There, on our plain, non-HD, screen, was the word "sistor". Or would it that "o" actually have been a clear "e" had we actually had the HD channel? And the debate continues..

Anyone know any great deals to get HD around here?

Takeout treat or Takeout cheap?

Well I'm under the weather with a bad head cold and my husband came home and surprised me with some chicken soup from Swiss Chalet. Well not really a complete surprise- I asked him to, and SURPRISE- he came during his lunch hour. Thanks sweetie! :)

Gotta love the Swiss Chalet Chicken Noodle Soup. Although a word of caution. To my own surprise, the serving size was very small. It was a small cup, not their usual soup container. (It was a little bigger than their dipping sauce container). I called to question this, because the soup still cost him $2.99. I was told this was the cup size, and the "bowl" size would be $3.99. Well for the $1 price difference, take it from me, order the bowl!
It's worth the extra buck and you'll still thank your husband for the wonderful caring gesture.

Welcome to the Miton yummies blog!

So here we go. Who said writing a blog about stuff you like to do isn't a great idea? After seeing Julie & Julia- great movie- I was inspired. Here was a woman, not too much unlike myself, who thought of the idea to write a blog about cooking her way through Julia Child's cookbook. Sounds simple enough, doens't it? Well I'm not going to duplicate this feat, but I have decided to start my own blog about what I love to do- and I suspect, I'm not the only one who loves to do these things. My blog will include my thoughts and experiences on eating, cooking, drinking, travelling, shopping, and all that fun stuff around our great community of Milton. And what better name for our blog, than the Milton yummies. You blogger connaisseurs will laugh at the reference.

What I love about this, is that there are really no rules. I can write what I want, when I want and I hope you'll join me in this venture.

So where do we start? Let's see what happens and we'll go from there.
